Montélimar, the 'capital of nougat'

Montélimar is the capital of nougat. But it is also a gate of the Midi: the first city where you feel this particular light that characterizes the Provence. Montélimar is an active city, especially in the cultural field.

Brief summary of history

At the end of the XIth century, Guillaume-Hugues d ' Adhémar is the first Lord of Montélimar. His family will reign over the region of Montélimar until the XIIIth century. The Adhemar built their Palace and many castles around their stronghold (Grignan, Châteauneuf-du-Rhône, Rochemaure and La Garde-Adhémar).

In 1365, a part of the city is under the protection of the Pope who is renovating the stately Palace and maintain the ramparts. In 1447, the dauphin (the future Louis XI) became the master of Montélimar. In 1562 the city was taken and plundered by the baron des Adrets, the garrison was killed to avenge the massacres of Orange.

Stroll in Montélimar

The former centre of Montélimar is pedestrian. The Allées Provençales together several boulevards on almost a kilometre. Cafes, breweries and boutiques offer regional specialities. There are a few historical monuments and mansions (Puy-Montbrun, Chabrillan and the House of Diane de Poitiers). As well as the Collegiate Church of Sainte-Croix and the chapel Notre-Dame-de-la-Rose.

The Adhémar Castle

The Adhémar Castle is a remarkable example of architecture southern Romane. The XIIth century medieval palace consists of a fortified enclosure, a stately home, a dungeon and a romanesque chapel. In the second part of the XIIth century the original castle is transformed into a Palace by the Adhémar to express their wealth. Then it became a possession of the Pope and then dauphinoise. The Castle became at the end of the XVIth century a Citadel. It will be transformed into jail from 1791 to 1926.

The Adhémar Castle currently houses a contemporary art center that develops an ambitious programming of temporary exhibitions.

The Museum of nougat

The great speciality of Montélimar is nougat. It is a honey and almond confectionery, that can be wrapped and topped with chocolate, and other fruit.

Arnaud Soubeyran is the oldest craft factory, founded in 1837. In a succession of unexpected sets the factory-Museum showcases the history of nougat and its components. Visitors stroll along the kitchen and the workshop and can see the stages of manufacture of nougat and sweets.

The Miniature Museum

Located in the chapel of the old Hôtel-Dieu, the Miniature Museum presents more than 300 miniatures from around the world. All this object must meet two conditions: respect the scale (1/12 e) and be made of the same material as its model. Of microminiatures, invisible to the naked eye, are also exhibited, pushing back the limits of the impossible.
