The capital of the Médoc wine

Located at halfway between Bordeaux and the Pointe de Grave, Pauillac stretches along the largest estuary in Europe, the Gironde. Capital of the Médoc wine with 18 Crus Classés in 1855, whose first 3 (the chateaux Lafite-Rothschild, Latour and Mouton-Rothschild). Pauillac is a universe which combines culture and heritage, good food, entertainment and leisure activities.

Brief summary of history

Although traces of Pauillac date back to prehistory, is truly in the eighteenth century with the expansion of the vineyard that the city takes the face that it is today. Thanks to its location in edge of Gironde, in the 19th and 20th centuries heavy industries settle in Pauillac. Pauillac was the starting point of the great transatlantic destined for South America.

The cultivation of the vine grows in Pauillac in the 14th and 15th centuries. Pauillac is a market town, little urbanized, with houses scattered in hamlets in the middle of a landscape of vineyards. The booming of the vineyard is in the 18th century.

The Pauillac vineyard

The Pauillac vineyard is one of the appellations "Grands crus" of the Médoc Bordeaux vineyards. It extends on nearly 1,100 hectares. The commune of Pauillac has 37 wineries including 18 "Grands Crus Classés in 1855". In particular the Premiers crus: Château Lafitte Rothschild, Château Latour and Château Mouton Rothschild.

In Pauillac

  • The town of Pauillac retains vestiges of its history: the Church of Saint Martin, the Plaza La Fayette, a formerly covered market presbytery, Marina and the cave of Artigues.
  • Visit the castles are very appreciated. Some of them offer (chateau Lynch Bages, Château Pedesclaux) art exhibitions or museums (Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande and his collection of old lenses, Château Mouton Rothschild and its Museum of wine in Art).
  • The former hamlet restored and dedicated to the art of entertaining in the Medoc region: the village of Bages.
  • The small Museum of automatons represents animals who imagine instead of humans.
