Medieval city of the Périgord Noir, the charm of Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère lies in the richness of its historical heritage as well as in the beauty of its natural setting, with its houses in pierre blondes and hot and the maze of narrow streets. Rated "Plus Beaux Villages de France" for its Romanesque church from the 12th century, the castles Clérans and Chaban, both from the 16th century and the Manor of the room.

Brief summary of history

After experiencing a Gallo-Roman settlement, the communal territory saw the installation in the 12th century a Benedictine Priory dependent on the Abbey of Sarlat. The first known written mention of Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère dates back to the 13th century. It was at this time that date Chaban Castle, destroyed in the 14th century and rebuilt in the two following centuries. The Manor of the Hall is built in the 15th century and the castle of Clérans in the 16th century.

The Romanesque church
The Romanesque church of the 12th century is the jewel in Saint Léon. A very simple architecture, it consists of a single nave extended a transept and an apse where the altar. Two-storey Bell Tower, whose four-sided roof is covered with slate, rises from the dome that caps the central square of the transept. During the summer, the Church is the majestic setting of the Musical Festival of the Périgord Noir.
 
The castle of Clérans
Clérans dates from the 16th century castle, it overlooks the Vézère which it is protected by a wall. It has a beautiful polygonal staircase Tower and turrets of angles.
 
The castle of Chaban
Chaban Castle is built in the 16th century. Two main building at right angles are in a closed court. Skylights and door of the tower are of Renaissance style, the other building has a Louis XIII style gate. The castle is a private site.
 
Manor room
Room manor was built in the 14th century. It is a package which includes the Manor and a square keep which is abutting a corner tower, the donjon and the tower is crowned with machicolations.
 
The expiatory Chapel
The chapel presents a cubic form with four buttresses at the corners which are carved the coat of arms of the Lords who had it built in the 16th century. It is covered with slate and lit by two ogival windows.
 
The cremation
Due to regular flooding of the Vezere, the formerly cemetery near the Church moved in 1846. It is located in an El sharkawy (a grave in the thickness of a wall of a religious building, it was usually reserved for the nobles) near the Chapelle expiatoire at the exit of the village.

In lush greenery, on the seafront of Vézère, the Conquil offers three types of animation: a Dinosaur Park and an adventure in the trees. And on the other hand the cave natural site, the Park contains an outstanding ensemble of rockshelters furnished and fortified, preserved in a natural and wild.
