Menthon, the town of lemons

Chin is considered the hottest station on the Côte d'Azur, it is what made its success during the Belle Epoque. It is a city where nature and culture harmoniously combine: City of gardens, lemon, but also city cited "art and history", Menthon is rich in natural and historical heritage exceptional. Brief summary of history

Via "Julia Augusta", the Roman road which linked Vintimille to Nice (Cimiez) and in Rome, would cross Chin. Its position at the limit of the Provençal County Angevin and the Republic of Genoa actually a coveted position. Acquired in 1346 by Charles Grimaldi of Monaco, Menton remained under the sovereignty of the monégasque princes for five centuries until 1848, time where she proclaimed 'City free' as Roquebrune. These two free cities became French one year after the County of Nice, in 1861.

The main monuments

  • The City Hall of Menton wedding room has been decorated in the 1950s by Jean Cocteau, which turned it into a gigantic work of art.
  • The Palace of Europe, built in 1909 by the architect Hans-Georg Tersling, is the former casino in the city. With its imposing façade, it is one of the main buildings of the city centre.
  • The covered market built in 1898 by Adrien Rey is remarkable for its polychrome brick and ceramics.
  • The Riviera is a former hotel built in 1898. The eclectic style building and its monumental design represent the type of a palace of the Belle Epoque architecture.

Saint-Michel-Archange Basilica

The Saint-Michel-Archange Basilica is a jewel of Baroque art. Built in 1619, it is the work of Genoese Lorenzo Lavagna. In accordance with the Baroque taste, the ramp is designed as the prospect of a monument which affirms the power of the prince. The facade of the Saint-Michel Church is therefore the highlight of a perspective. Of many baroque altarpieces sheathe the side chapels giving a warm and mysterious response the area strong and clear of the nave.

Museums

The Museum of regional prehistory
Restoring scenes of the time with hunters life-size, tools, and clothing, we can view the reality of the times: it is a sort of Museum Grévin of a very particular style. In this magical Museum found the last peoples of hunters who gradually change their food practices and announce agriculture. The basement of the Museum is devoted to the arts and popular traditions.

The Museum Jean Cocteau
The Museum Jean Cocteau - Collection Severin Wunderman is dedicated to the work of the great poet. This collection of paintings, drawings, ceramics, tapestries, jewelry, photographs, audio and film excerpts. Also 450 works of great masters of modern art from the entourage of Jean Cocteau: Picasso, Modigliani, Chirico and Miro. As well as a Fund of 360 works related to Sarah Bernhardt who was the first "sacred Monster" by Jean Cocteau.

The gardens of Menton

The 'lemon Festival' to place each year at the end of the winter in the town of Menton. Since the half of the 15th century, the commune of Menton is a major producer of lemon in Europe.
 
The Palais Carnolès citrus garden
Located on avenue of the Madonna, it houses the largest collection of citrus in Europe. 'The prince's Garden' is made in 1725 by architect Latour. The garden lists 137 varieties of citrus, it is labeled "remarkable Garden".
 
Val Rahmeh Botanical Garden
In 1925 Lord Percy Radcliffe, former Governor of the island of Malta, creates an exotic garden. It is home to many exotic and edible plants as well as some rare species as Sophora toromino, the mythical tree of Easter Island.
 
The greenhouse of the Madonna
The Botanical Garden was created in the 1920-1930s by major Lawrence Johnston, who brought back from his travels in South Africa and in the East a large number of plants. It is also labeled "remarkable Garden".
