Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux

The former centre of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux is well preserved and rich in history. We view of the Roman walls which are the ruins of the ancient city walls. To visit places the Tour Neuve and L'Esplan, several mansions, the cathedral of our Lady and Saint Paul, the former Episcopal Palace (Castle), the Notre-Dame gate, the Jewish Tower and Aiguebelle and Saint-Jean quarters.

The advantages of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux are not limited to this village of character, they are many: local products, beautiful and natural landscapes and the surrounding sites.

Brief summary of history

The village of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux lacks three castles. In fact its name comes from a bad translation of the ancient name of the city "Saint Paul-Tricastin. Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux became an episcopal seat since the IInd century, with the construction of a first cathedral.

As all the Dauphiné, Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux facing religious struggles. The city was successively occupied by the protestant and Catholic parties. It will be destroyed, then rebuilt in the XVIIth century, when religious peace will be returned. The mansions are built from the XVIIIth century.

Notre-Dame Cathedral

The Notre-Dame de Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Provençal Romanesque art inspired by the antiquity. This imposing edifice was built in the middle of the XIIth century, it will be completed around 1220. The vaulted nave is a magnificent elevation of 24 metres. It is a nice buffet of organ that dates from 1704 made by Charles Boisselin of Avignon factor. Also a curious bas-relief of the pillar of the pulpit.

The Museum of archaeology tricastine

The Museum of archaeology Tricastine presents the archaeological discoveries found at Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux, in particular the Gallo-Roman necropolis of the Valladas. More than 240 tombs from the Ist to the IInd century, magnificent objects of everyday life, elements of ornaments, tableware and oil lamps whole services. Also the discovery in the current city of a mosaic of a great dimension and of exceptional beauty.

The Tricastin black truffle

The Tricastin black truffle
High-place of production farm, Tricastin is a hyphen between the Drôme and Vaucluse, main producing french departments of truffles. This area of production is one of the largest in Europe. At the heart of this region, Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux organizes every Tuesday morning for the black truffle market (10 am to 12 noon, L'esplan place).
