The chateau de Cazeneuve

Cazeneuve primitive Castle is the former residence of the Kings of Navarre, property of the King Henri IV. It was built by Amanieu VII of Albret on a rocky Bank. It included within its precincts the medieval motte of the 11th century preceded by a large courtyard whose walls protected the village.

In the 17th century, the medieval castle turns into Castle Marina and pageantry. In 1583, Henri IV assigned to residence at the chateau de Cazeneuve his wife, Queen Margot, during their separation and waiting for the annulment of their marriage.

Brief summary of history

This former medieval fortress backed by a primitive motte founded by the Albret in the 9th century, enlarged in the 14th century to erect an entire "City" and make their favourite residence. The Château de Cazeneuve is the former property of the Kings of Navarre, the King of France Henri IV and Queen Margot. Illustrious monarchs also attended the Castle as Edward I of England in 1287, Louis XIII in 1620 and Louis XIV will also make a stop. Cazeneuve Castle is still inhabited by the ducal family of Sabran - Pontevès.

Visit of the Castle

The chateau de Cazeneuve married the shape of an irregular polygon, it is built overlooking the Gorges of Ciron. It is surrounded by moats, defended by two towers and surrounds a large courtyard of honour within its walls.

Cazeneuve Castle is surrounded by a large wooded park that runs along the Ciron and contains water, the mill, the wash-house and the bird island. The giant bambouseraie is remarkable.
