A bastide town

Founded in 1280, the old town of Cadillac has yet a regular plan, the major part of its walls, two fortified gates, and Central with a few houses with arcades and a collegiate church founded in 1494. Located in a wine region boasting a (Bordeaux AOC) label, the Cadillac Vineyard produces a famous wine.

Brief summary of history

Cadillac is a bastide founded in 1280 by Edward I of England to ensure the defence of the city of Bordeaux. Due to its accession, in 1379, Bordeaux Alliance of defense against French troops, the bastide of Cadillac was called goddaughter of Bordeaux. This alliance encouraged many commercial exchanges with the Gironde capital via the Garonne. She contributed, from the second half of the 14th century, the creation and development of the vineyards in the Entre-Deux-Mers (between Garonne and Dordogne) thanks to its port on the Garonne where passed the wine to Bordeaux.

The castle of the Dukes of Epernon

At the end of the 16th century, the duc d' Épernon had built a castle, worthy of the Royal residences. This castle still has monumental fireplaces and remarkable painted ceilings. Transformed into a prison for women in the 19th century, it suffered the damage of a fire but, in recent years, was the subject of many restorations. The Duke of Épernon was built a funerary chapel for his family. It housed a monumental mausoleum.

The ports of Cadillac

The door of the clock dates from the beginning of the 14th century. It has four floors defended by slits above a passage guarded by a deadfall. In 1772, it is covered with a turret dome roof to shelter a clockwork mechanism.

The door from the sea, built from 1315, was originally in the alignment of the wall, defended by three slits and machicolations still visible on the reverse. It was subsequently increased and a tower protruding niches.

The cadillac (AOC) wine

The cadillac is a french appellation d'origine contrôlée wine produced on twenty-two municipalities around Cadillac. With the designations Loupiac and Sainte-Croix-du-Mont, they form a small region producing sweet wines in the Entre-Deux-Mers, in the vineyards of Bordeaux.
