Villars-les-Dombes

Villars-les-Dombes is at the heart of the region of the Dombes. This is the first fish region freshwater France with ancestral traditions of fishing pond. The bird park is a paradise for birds, there are also a fauna and flora of exception in unspoilt nature.

Brief summary of history

The lordship of Villars attested in 940. The Lords of Villars were among major countries of Ain barons, but they disappeared at the end of the 12th century. The ancient Lordship of Villars became the Bailiwick of Villars, whose capital was at Trévoux and remained until about 1400. In 1565, Villars was erected to a marquisate dependent on the House of Savoy.

The bird park

Located on one of the main axes of migration in Europe, Villars-les-Dombes Bird Park has 400 species an area of 35 hectares. It is one of the most beautiful sights of birds in flight in the world. With 18 represented orders on 25 that is the world of birds, the bird park has one of the collections most diverse in Europe and the largest in France.

The ponds of the Dombes

With about a thousand ponds more than 10'000 hectares of water, the Dombes reveals a landscape changing and unexpected. It is a region rich in European birds: ducks, waders, water game.

Traditional fishing in ponds is still practiced, the Dombes is the first fish region of France in fresh water. These farms are managed by some 300 farmers who produce carp and Pike.

In Villars-les-Dombes

The poype (earth mound or motte castrale) of Villars-les-Dombes is built on three levels, in dates back to 940. There are the remains of a red-brick Tower and the remains of the ancient castle of the Lords of Villars, owners of the Dombes and part of the Bresse until 1186. The poype cannot be visited, but panels explain its history.

The Church of the Holy Virgin Nativity is of Romanesque origin, it has been redesigned over the centuries.

The trail pedestrian Pierre Poivre part train station of Villars - les - Dombes for the bird park and the Observatory on the pond Chayenne (distance 1750 metres approximately 30 min).

Golf du Gouverneur belongs to those rare places where you can feel invaded with at the outset by a feeling of serenity. Golf du Gouverneur is classified among the most beautiful golf courses of France on an area of 220 hectares. It has two 18 hole courses.
