It benefits from one excursion to the Large-Charterhouse to gain, on on July 11th, Grenoble. This city has its own Parlement and, thanks to the mediation of the Prince de Conti, Mr. Renou will be tolerated there. It there herborizes and benefits from its stay to make a pilgrimage in Charmettes and to go on the tomb of Mrs. de Warens, in Chambéry. In Grenoble, however, its incognito is not a mystery for anybody and gives place to small vexations. Irritated, Jean-Jacques leaves Grenoble on on August 12th for a more discrete retirement in the small town of Bourgoin, with the limit of the area of the Dauphine one.

Therese Levasseur, who had remained in Trie, joined there the 26. A surprise waits there: on August 30th, Jean-Jacques invites to dine the mayor on Bourgoin and his/her cousin and, taking the hand of Therese, announces his decision solemnly to them to marry that which has been his/her partner for more than twenty years. “The most important act of the life” of Jean-Jacques has unfortunately, no legal value, not as well because of the singular character of the ceremony as of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes: since 1685, only are recognized like valid contracts the marriages celebrated by a catholic priest. Therese, will thus remain, from the point of view of the right, “controlling it” of J. - J. Rousseau.

In January 1769, the new grooms settle with a half mile of Bourgoin, in the village of Monquin. Jean-Jacques goes back to the Confessions and will write in Monquin almost all the second part. Lastly, in January 1770, in a burst of energy, it decides, facing the instructions of Prince de Conti, to give up its pseudonym and to cease hiding like a culprit. Whatever are the risks, he will be again Jean-Jacques Rousseau, will return to Paris and will fight for his rehabilitation: “it is not any more my person who it is necessary to think of defending, it is my memory”. On April 10th, it leaves Monquin. After a stay in Lyon and a stop with Montbard, where it will greet large Buffon, it is, in return, June in the capital.
