The centenary of the canton of Vaud
In 1903, the canton of Vaud celebrated the centenary of its creation. During the century, patriotism of Vaud and the helvetism had developed, maintained at the time of the meetings of the many song and gymnastics, shooting clubs.
With the romantic movement, they were the supports of artistic creation.
Right Olivier (1807-1876), with two volumes on the Canton of Vaud, had wanted to raise a “monument with his fatherland”. The Council of State had ordered with the painter Charles Gleyre (1806-1874) two historical tables, Major Davel and the Romans passing under the yoke. Eugene Rambert (1830-1886) had become celebrates with his work the Swiss Alps.
At the end of the century, innumerable families had bought a reproduction of the table the Escape of Charles L Téméraire of the very popular Eugene Burnand (1850-1921).
Music
One sang much: the Fatherland, the Alps and nature. The Festivals of the Vine growers, especially those of 1889 and 1905 - Rene Morax (1873-1963) and Gustave Doret (1866-1943) were the authors of the booklet and the music - gathered the Of Vaud ones around the celebration of the ground and the seasons.
In 1903, Emile Jaques-Dalcroze (1865-1950) made play thousands of observers the Festival of Vaud.
The Theater of Jorat with Mézières was inaugurated in 1908.
Artists create a new syle
But the literature, the music or the painting “of the finer feelingss” had their criticisms. Young artists, of which much worked in Paris, created a new style. Eugene Grasset (1845-1917), Theophilus Steinlen (1859-1923), Felix Vallotton (1865-1925), Marius Borgeaud (1861-1924), Rene Auberjonois (1872-1957) left painting the celebration of the history or the country. In literature, a young person and brilliant team broke with the tradition of the helvetism and the which moralize writings, which caused negative strong reactions.
The review of the Books of Vaud (1912-1919) was animated by Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz (1878-1947), Paul Budry (1883-1949) and Edmond Gilliard (1875-1969). The idea had been launched from there in a young conductor, Ernest Ansermet (1883-1969). During the First World War, the Russian composer Stravinsky and Ramuz created the History of the soldier. Ansermet accompanied the Russian Ballet in round in America.
Never undoubtedly artistic creation nor the opening on the world and new forms of expression were also sharp only at the beginning of this century. But this glare was the fact of a minority and not very popular, before Ramuz does not become, in its turn, an “official” author.
