The principal place of Pécs
Pécs is a town of Hungary. With a surface of 162.61 km ², it is the fifth plus Hungarian big city. It counted 162' 498 inhabitants in 2001.
Pécs was selected European Capitale of the culture for 2010.
History
Following the annexation of the west of Hungary by the Romain Empire, the Romans founded the town of Sopianae. It became an important Christian city at the time of first half of the IV E century. The city was lost with the fall of the Roman Empire. Charlemagne reconquered the city and annexed it to the Saint Worsens Romain Germanique.
The name of Pécs appears in documents as from 1235. Louis I er the Large one founds the first university of Hungary with Pécs in 1367, under the incentive of the chancellor of the king, who was also the mayor of the city.
After the defeat of Louis II in Mohács in 1526, the town of Pécs occupied in 1543 by Turkish, and was reconquered in 1686.
