Poet, writer, translator, man of letters of international level, it was one of the more great men of the modern Hungarian literature. It accepted the Baumgarten price (1936) and the price Kossuth (1970). It is at the 15 years age that its first writings “Egyszer régen” (Once in the past) were published in the newspaper “Hír” of Szombathely.

In autumn 1933 it began its studies of history geography at the University Erzsébet de Pécs In 1935, during one six-month period it attended the right, then philosophy and esthetics. In 1939, it supported its thesis of philosophy. The young poet found quickly within the university of Pécs of the companions with whom it shared the same centers of interest and with which it was dependant during all its life such as Gyula Takáts and Sándor Tatai poets. Later it met the poets Gyõzõ Csorba and Nándor Várkonyi and the painter Ferenc Martyn, who will remain his/her friends.

The cultural medium of Pécs was an excellent substrate for him, it had the possibility of listening to at the university the best professors of the time and among them József Halasy-Nagy to which it dedicated its thesis or Lajos Fülep which was philosophical and historian of Article both had a great influence on him. During its academic works, with his friends, it tried to found a literary review but without success. Nevertheless, in 1931 in Pécs, the Foundation Janus Pannonius was created and it gathered young talented people of which Weöres Sándor, and it militated so that its first five collections are published in Pécs. “Hideg van” (The weather is cold) was its first personal collection, published on account of author at the 21 years age, in which it compiled poems of youth written as from 1928. Inter alia, concerning “Öregek” (old men) made famous for the music of Zoltán Kodály which he had written at the 15 years age. Already with its first works, it represented a new current in Hungarian poetry because its poems reflect not only its original glance on the life and reality but they exposes with an inimitable beauty the interior music major and the rhythm of the Hungarian language which it was the only one to use in this manner.

It is in Pécs that its collections “with kõ appeared are az ember” (stone and the man) in 1935 and “with teremtés dicsérete” (the praise of creation) in 1938. Its essay entitled “with worms születése - Meditátió be vallomás” (birth of the poem - Meditation and confession) was published in 1939 in the review of the university. Its epic poem heading “Theomachia” was published in 1941 in the first number of the review “Sorsunk”, then the following year the “Library of the Company Janus Pannonius” published it in an autonomous collection. The Company Janus Pannonius played also a great part in its philosophical formation and the formation of its literary designs.

In 1939, it left Pécs for one short period but in 1941 it worked already in the Public library while taking part in the drafting of the review “Sorsunk” which launched out at that time. He wrote in this time, several poems on the town of Pécs. Its activities of librarian ceased in 1943 but, in good friend, it often returned in Pécs because he was collaborator with the review “Jelenkor”.

In the years 1960, when the poetry of Weöres was isolated by the official cultural policy, by sympathy “Jelenkor” published its poems regularly because it could publish elsewhere only its translations and its poems of youth. It is only in 1964 qu ' one enabled him to turn over to the literary life. For its fiftieth birthday, the Parisian review “Magyar M U hely” left an special issue with its poems. The greatest success of its career was its prose poem entitled “Psziché” in which he reports the life of the poetess Erzsébet Lónyay living to the XIX ^E century while using of the language of the time. Work, as from 1972, was several times republished, and adapted to the cinema by Gábor Bódy, like production and played Zsebszínház of Pécsi Nemzeti Színház (National theater of Pécs). In 1974, Weöres Sándor accepted the European poetic price in Vienna.

Its work comprises also plays. The tale “Holdbéli csónakos” (the rower of the moon) was played Thália Színház of Budapest, then in 1979 in Pécsi Nemzeti Színház with decorations and costumes of Ferenc Martyn. Its tragi-comedy entitled “Szent György be has Sárkány” (Holy George and the dragon) was played the theater Csiky Gergely de Kaposvár, and its part of puppets “Csalóka Peter” in Bábszínház of Budapest. In the three volumes of its complete works (1981) its frisky and fantastic poetry is declined in a hundred forms. Added to that the posthumous collection “with sebzett föld éneke” (the song of the scarified ground) found following research by Amy Károlyi who had written of it the postface of the first edition in 1990. The document concerning with the relation between him and Pécs still awaits their publication.
