Located at the center of the alpine arc, Were worth it is a geographical entity delimited relatively well by the Bernese and Valaisan alpines range. This position is not without influence on the history of the generations of men and women who settled there and lived there, even if the individual and collective destinies are never achieved in isolation.
The goal of this history of Were worth is not to glorify the past nor to enumerate events and dates which marked the former centuries. To be rich of teaching, the history must be centered on the men; it is all the anonymous crowd of the Valaisans and Valaisan which built, worked and animated the Old man-Country which was used as main idea.
In fact, three primary reasons explain the operational startup of this work:
- Research on the ground and in the files widened knowledge and renewed the comprehension of the past.
- Questions, innovative, emerged which made it possible a new generation of historians to approach aspects forsaken before.
- Various mediums wish to have of a synthesis of knowledge and a framework for research to be done.
The history of Were worth proposes an ambitious course in the past of the canton, since the first traces of the human presence until the threshold of the third millennium. The great stages of the Valaisan history correspond roughly speaking to the articulations of the European history: the neolithisation, end of the Middle Ages, the Revolution, the beginning of industrialization, end of the Second world war, to quote only some of them. About ten researchers built this history by posing a new glance on the sequences of facts and situations of the past.
