Son of Charles Louis Gabriel, baron of Sarraz, and Marie Anne de Watteville de Mollens. Its deafness obliged Gingins (Frederic Charles Jean) to stop its studies and a commercial formation and to give up the military career. He worked as translator of French language to the chancellery of State of Bern (1817-1828), then lived of his revenues and made important restorations with the family castle of Sarraz.
He published work of botany of 1823 to 1833, then, of 1833 to 1863, historical studies, especially on the first and second kingdoms of Burgundy. One of the founders, in 1837, of the Company of history of the French-speaking Switzerland , it was honorary president since 1847.
Correspondent of various learned societies, foreign and national. Many decorations, doctorate honoris causa of the university of Bern (1844), professor emeritus with the academy of Lausanne (1854).
