The American continent became populated more tardily than the rest of the world. One calls pre-Columbian civilizations, in reference to Christophe Colomb, civilizations which developed in Central America and South America before the Spanish conquest. Most brilliant of them were those of the Mayas (IVe - Xe century), of Aztec (Xe - XVIe century) and of Incas (XVe - XVIe century), and the religion held a fundamental place to with it.
