Son and successor of Henri I and Anne of Kiev, it reigned until 1066 under the supervision of his mother and her uncle, the count Baudouin V of Flanders.

Major, it tried to affirm, without much success, the royal authority in Flanders and in the Anglo-Norman kingdom, but succeeds in joining together with the field Gâtinais, Vexin and the Viscount of Bourges.

His/her son Louis VI succeeded to him.
